Visiting My Daughter-Day One

Hubby and I took a much needed vacation (I was becoming really, really whiny) and visited our daughter and her family. What a joy to take a road trip and be blessed to see family!

Rhododendron

Our daughter loves photography, so she and I just hung out and practiced together. Enjoy the stroll in her little garden!

It’s not about the resources you have available. It’s about the resourcefulness you have within you. -Tony Robbins

Cornflower/Batchelor Button

The amount of satisfaction you get from life depends largely on your own ingenuity, self-sufficiency, and resourcefulness. People who wait around for life to supply their satisfaction usually find boredom instead. -William C. Menninger

However desperate the situation and circumstances, don’t despair. When there is everything to fear, be unafraid. When surrounded by dangers, fear none of them. When without resources, depend on resourcefulness. When surprised, take the enemy by surprise. -Sun Tzu

Obstacles, of course, are developmentally necessary: they teach kids strategy, patience, critical thinking, resilience and resourcefulness. -Naomi Wolf

…as your father, my instinct is to protect you … Other people will want to protect you too. But remember that you are not a damsel in distress, waiting for some prince to rescue you. Forget the prince. With your brain and your resourcefulness, you can rescue yourself. -Brad Meltzer

A very good case can be made, on moral as well as economic grounds, for a system in which the individual is required to stand on his own feet, not to lean on the state for handouts. Character, resourcefulness, capacity are formed and developed in struggle with obstacles, not in waiting passively for benefits from outside. -William Henry Chamberlin

Westerns aren’t about the gunfight, even though it has to be there at one point. It’s not what they’re about, at least the good ones. It’s about the drama. It’s about the resourcefulness of men and women. -Kevin Costner

Do not blame the thistle that you see no beauty. -Johnathan Lockwood Huie

Spirea

I see, when I bend close, how each leaflet of a climbing rose is bordered with frost, the autumn counterpart of the dewdrops of summer dawns. The feathery leaves of yarrow are thick with silver rime and dry thistle heads rise like goblets plated with silver catching the sun. -Edwin Way Teale

Yarrow

You can imagine thistle-down so light that when you run after it your running motion would drive it away from you, and that the more you tried to catch it the faster it would fly from your grasp. And it should be with every man, that, when he is chased by troubles, they, chasing, shall raise him higher and higher.
-Henry Ward Beecher

Lavender

The thistle is a prince. Let any man that has an eye for beauty take a view of the whole plant, and where will he see a more expressive grace and symmetry; and where is there a more kingly flower? –Henry Ward Beecher

Thistle

If your thought is a rose, you are a rose garden; and if it is a thistle, you are fuel for the fire. -Rumi

A crippled child Said, “How shall I dance?” Let your heart dance,We said. Then the invalid said: “How shall I sing?” Let your heart sing, We said. Then spoke the poor dead thistle, “But I, how shall I dance?” Let your heart fly to the wind, We said. Then God spoke from above “How shall I descend from the blue?” Come dance for us here in the light, We said. All the valley is dancing Together under the sun, And the heart of him who joins us not Is turned to dust, to dust.
-Gabriela Mistral

Driving down the wrong road and knowing it, The fork years behind, how many have thought To pull up on the shoulder and leave the car Empty, strike out across the fields; and how many Are still mazed among dock and thistle, Seeking the road they should have taken? -Damon Knight

When on the breath of Autumn’s breeze, From pastures dry and brown, Goes floating, like an idle thought, The fair, white thistle-down; O, then what joy to walk at will, Upon the golden harvest-hill! -Mary Howitt

Macro Practice

“You will never get better with the macro lens unless you use it!”

So says my daughter (and my daughter-in-law, and my niece).

They are right.  This post is for them.

I almost always shoot with my 55mm lens.  I have a macro lens and I whine to them that I have trouble with it.

They are unsympathetic (Actually, they are sympathetic, but not enough to let me off the hook.).  Smart girls.

So the following photos are my practice…trying to overcome camera shake…trying to focus properly…trying.

Showing my girls that I am practicing.  I am using the macro lens.
