Quilting Floral Reflections 2

The last time that I shared a Floral Reflections progress report, I was considering  what to use for the background filler for the applique blocks.

My go-to filler is stippling, but I wanted to try something different.   I did think about pebbles.  I love the look of pebbling, but I thought that would be too much work.

Cindy Needham talks about sunshine and shadow.  She uses scribbling to create the shadow and emphasize the sunshine.  So I decided to try it!

Scribbling does indeed create shadow and looks great!  But, for me, on a large project, this is a slow and tedious process!

Quilting Floral Reflections

Floral Reflections

When I last shared an update about the Floral Reflections quilt, I shared that all of the stitching in the ditch and outline stitching was finished.

But I didn’t share a photo of what that looks like from the back.

Now I have.

In general, I am a quilt by the seat of my pants kind of girl.  I don’t usually have my quilting all planned out.

While looking at this quilt, I thought the square blocks needed circular elements.

To get started, I am going to use two circle templates.

Floral Reflections

I traced larger circles around each block using Cindy Needham’s template, and I chose a small circle template to trace ‘berries’  from Karen Kay Buckley’s assortment.

We’ll see how this turns out.

Floral Reflections

Now that the Let’s Sew quilt is finished, the next project on my Focus 2020 list that I choose to tackle is Floral Reflections.  I talked about this project back in November 2019.

Floral Reflections

There have been several updates since then.

Floral Reflections

I don’t have photos of it, but I am currently stitching in the ditch all of the sashing and border seams.  Most of the basting pins are now removed, and the quilt is easier to handle.

I thought that I would be traditional and quilt hanging diamonds, but I have changed my mind.  I am machine quilting, and I don’t want to quilt over the applique, nor do I want to break thread.

Therefore, I will be outline stitching the applique and stitching a filler design in the blocks.

Floral Reflections

I decided to work on an old UFO.  I mentioned Floral Reflections when I created my Focus List and shared the project in this post.

I shared that I must have started this project sometime in the 90’s, and that all twelve blocks had been fused and then set aside.

The next step is to machine applique the blocks, and that is what I am working on.  I have begun by using Sulky rayon threads and a small zig-zag stitch on the leaves and stems of the flowers.

The quilt inspector is trying hard to stay awake, but she is bored with this project.

When I finish the leaves and stems, I will move on to the berries and flowers.

August OMG 2017 Goal

Patchwork Times announced the number 8 as the UFO goal for August.

My number 8 is these floral blocks:

One Monthly Goal - Floral Blocks

I stitched these 3 blocks many moons ago when I was teaching a machine applique class.

What to do…pillows…, a table runner…, a wall hanging…, tote bags?

Hmmmmm….

I am linking up with Elm Street Quilts for One Monthly Goal (OMG).
