Today is my day for the Dust Off A Book Blog Hop. I hope that you have been enjoying all of the other participants in this hop!
Bea asked the participants if we would show our oldest quilt book.
Mine is ‘The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America’ by Carrie A. Hall and Rose G. Kretsinger.
This book is packed full of quilt blocks, colonial quilts and quilts that have been in exhibits…a great historical reference!
You can still find this classic sold by various booksellers and vintage shops.
Having said that, I am not using the oldest quilt book in my collection for this blog hop.
I dusted off ‘American Country Scrap Quilts’ by Liz Porter and Marianne Fons (printed in 1995). I used to watch them faithfully on PBS many years ago. Those two have done a lot for the world of quilters!
I did a quick search on Google, and you can still find this book.
I chose to make Aunt Sukey’s Choice. When I saw that pattern, I knew right away that I was going to make it. I happen to have a large stack of four-patches that were part of multiple swaps from the quilt guild that I was a member of. This was back in the day…like the 90’s days. Perfect!
I didn’t want to make a full-size quilt, so I made nine blocks for a small wall hanging, or table topper. My version is about 37” square. (Unfortunately, only 9 of that big stack of four-patches got used!)
The primitive, country look isn’t as popular as it was then, but I am pleased to have used up scraps, and I like how this turned out.
Recognize any of these scraps?
Do you still have them in your stash?
I realized after I had begun this project, that I had made a red and white version of Aunt Sukey’s Choice a few years ago (2017). It is quite different from this one! If you would like to see it, then click here. There is a free project download for Electric Quilt users here!
Thank you, Bea, for hosting this party!

Have fun and quilt on!

Both of those Aunt Sukey’s Choice are beautiful. I love scraps and I love red/white, so you couldn’t miss with either of those. I think a traditional pattern like this is never out of style.

Thank you, Susan! I agree…there is much that can be done with traditional blocks! 🙂

That topper looks fabulous on your table. It’s so much fun to find a pattern and actually have many of the parts in your stash already. What a bonus. It was fun looking at the different fabrics in it, as well. I have had many of them in my stash in the past as well.

Thank you, Joan! The bonus was fun, and I still have plenty of bonus to play with! Ha, ha! 🙂

Great quilt. I used to watch that show too. I have a DVD with a season of the shows because one of my quilts were featured on the show.

Didn’t we all watch Fons & Porter?! I bet that is a great book to have on hand. I like your scrappy finish! (I also love your table and chairs! I think that might be my fave style and want to style my home more after that era! Instead, I’m busy quilting…)

I was very faithful to Fons & Porter at the time. Ha, ha! I love my table, too! It is a great family size and I really enjoy those times when we are all gathered round! 🙂

This is a fabulous version and I love that you used some 4 patches that were ready to be . I looked at your older version and this one is much more interesting. It looks great on your table. Love that you have a free EQ file for folks, never thought of doing that!

I only wish that I had used more of those 4 patches! One of these days I will do a scrappy project and get them out of the bin and sewn into something fun!
I intended to provide more free EQ files, but never got around to it. Thanks for checking out the other version of Aunt Sukey’s Choice. It lives with Mom. 🙂

Hi Laura! I think coming out for your second blog hop was worth waiting for! I used to watch Fons and Porter faithfully, too, along with Eleanor Burns. Those were the days . . . back in the 90s. I love the colors – it looks quite happy looking to me. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

I think I accomplished more in those days, Roseanne. In fact, I know I did. Computers do not save time…quite the opposite. Heh, heh! Maybe I should visit my old books more often! 🙂
