Visiting My Daughter-Day 3…Ferndale Cemetery

You might not think that a cemetery would be a destination for visiting, however the picturesque Ferndale Cemetery is the most photographed historic cemetery in California.

Ferndale Cemetery

The cemetery was established in 1868.

It is also the perfect backdrop for my daughter and I to practice a ‘ghosting’ photography technique (We need a lot more practice!).

I am going to apologize now for the not-so-sharp looking photos that I am going to share. I did not discover until long after my vacation was over that a malicious gleeful demon had changed some of my camera settings (I am positive that it couldn’t have been me!).

  1. Hi Laura! That ghosting technique is SO COOL!! Wow. I didn’t even know you could do something like that. I am really enjoying this journey of discovery you and your daughter are on. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. That is a fun technique…another rabbit hole to fall into for sure. I am sorry your settings were adjusted…those space aliens must have visited overnight.

  4. Beautiful photos, but your โ€˜ghostingโ€™ photography technique is amazing. I did that many years ago using a dark room. You’ve inspired me to try to learn how to do it with digital cameras. Really beautiful.

  6. I do enjoy cemetery walks. They don’t feel creepy to me, just very inviting to visit. In the daylight of course!

The photo with the folding chair brings to mind a family get together welcoming any who pass by that plot to join in.
Sounds like your visit to your daughter was just what you needed!

    • I find cemetery walks peaceful. Sometimes I feel sad when I read some of the headstones, but, for the most part…I enjoy it. I was thrilled when I visited a cemetery on a trip and found a great great grandmother’s grave. I sat right down and had a bit of a chat. ๐Ÿ™‚

I particularly liked the chair because it is facing a veteran’s marker; an easy way to stop a moment and pay respect.

  7. The cemetery does look like an unusual but not weird place to take a a walk. It is very like many of the Victorian cemeteries found here in the UK.
